The Importance of Mattress Cleaning

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feast on flakes of dead human skin.

Mattresses are one of the most personal items in a home, as they are used daily for rest. However, due to their frequent use and design, they can harbor unpleasant germs and allergens, such as dust mites.

All humans shed their skin every 25 to 45 days. This dead skin ends up in the mattress and bed sheets, attracting dust mites and other allergens. To prevent allergens and to keep the space sanitary, both mattresses and their dressings should be cleaned regularly.

Dust mites

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feast on flakes of dead human skin. Their feces contain a substance called DerP1, a very potent allergen. People allergic to dust mites may have asthma-like symptoms or chronic sinus problems; other symptoms include persistent sniffles, sinus headaches, waking up with scratchy eyes, and frequent sneezing.

Washing bed sheets in hot water regularly helps to kill and prevent dust mites, as this removes all dead skin, depriving them of their food source. It’s recommended to wash bed sheets every two weeks.

Other allergens

Like anything in a home, mattresses eventually become dirty and must be cleaned appropriately, as the fabric breathes and traps dust and other allergens. Dust and allergens are only removed through proper, thorough cleaning.

Some steps can be taken between cleanings to help prevent dust buildup. First, vacuum the mattress and box springs on both sides. Additionally, use a mattress cover to put an extra barrier between the mattress and the sheets, preventing dead skin from the sheets from falling into the mattress.

For thorough cleaning, mattresses require a professional cleaner, as the water needs to be heated to a specific temperature to kill the dust mites and remove all dust and germs. Mattresses should ideally be cleaned every 12 to 18 months; however, in the case of allergies, it is recommended to have these items cleaned more frequently. The less dust and dust mites in the house, the healthier the environment.

Though frequently washing bed sheets is on most people’s to-do list, it’s easy to forget how dirty the mattresses can become. Come up with a plan to ensure yearly mattress cleaning, such as setting a calendar reminder or scheduling appointments in advance. Ensuring that a home's primary place of rest is thoroughly clean promotes better health and longevity.
